It's been awhile since I've posted (other than sharing some giveaways), but I want you all to know that I have been busy! I am still working on the flowery hexagon quilt. I have posted many previous times about this, but I thought I should share some progress:
Background fabric is on the design wall, and it doesn't fit a queen size so part of it is on the floor.
The flower shapes are just pinned on temporarily. I'm trying to decide how close together they will be (and where).
Right now, this is what I am still doing: taking out the basting threads and paper then ironing and starching those puppies!
I just finished my last flower today, sewing the hexies together, that is (on the commuter train to work).
And, needless to say, my block of the months for Quilt Story and Craftsy have taken a backseat. I still haven't finished May for either one and it's almost July :(
I have a deadline for the flowery hexie quilt of August 1st (birthday), so this is basically all I have been working on.
I do have a question though. Can anyone suggest a good quilting design to go over the flower shapes? Also, something to go into the spaces between them? I'm pretty good at stippling, but I have not toyed too much with other designs. I would appreciate any suggestions in the comments.
Hope you are having a wonderful week! It's supposed to be a scorcher today and tomorrow here in the Northeast.
I'm linking up at WIP Wednesdays (Freshly Pieced).
Until next time,
Mike.
Many of my followers and quilting friends have told me that I need to change the name of my blog because I am not an amateur, but at heart, I always will be. I call myself an amateur to remind me that every stitch, every fabric shape and every seam is more perfect when it looks like it was made by a human being (especially if it’s me, and I am not perfect). This way I spend more time admiring my finished masterpieces and less time ripping out stitches. This is just a little bit of my journey...

This looks great! I like where it appears (to me anyway) you are going with this: more flowers in one corner, then spreading out from there. It's how flowers would fall naturally in a gentle breeze. Very pretty!! Great colors too!!
Very nice! As for quilting, how about some wavy lines that make is look like a breeze the flowers are blowing on?
I have to admit I am not a fan of these flowers as a rule but I really like how you are doing them as opposed to the traditional, all hexagons layout.
That's one fun quilt! I was amused by the Right Said Fred reference as well, it has to be said.
Looks great! I like the random placement of the flowers rather than having them all the same distance apart. It'll be fun to see the finished quilt--what a wonderful birthday present!
you can't read that post title, without singing in your head, can you? i can't.
thanks for the input on my quilting-i think i will do what you suggested-concentric circles, not in the ditch...we'll see how it goes.
as for you quilting...i once i did a quilt with stars where I did a stippling all over EXCEPT in the stars-it made them really pop out-literally. not sure if that would work for your hexies if they're larger than 4 inches or so, but maybe avoid the center hexi? i don't know...i'm sure you'll come up with something perfect!
Your colors are fantastic and I love the hexy flower layout. This is going to be an awesome quilt.
hmmmmmm, about quilting the hexis, how about pebbling the middle hexi, and petals on the outer hexis? I'm not sure, if I think of something better, I will let you know.
swirls in each hexi would be kinda cool
The less quilting you do in the hexies and the more in between, the more they will stand out. Perhaps a simple outline on them and then a tight stipple in between. I love the colors and think a random placement is always preferable.
Just saw this post at Geta's Quiltting Studio and thought of your query about your hexy quilt - http://cadouri-din-inima.blogspot.com/2012/06/new-quilt-and-pattern.html.
Love, love, love your quilt. I adore making things out of hexies, and have just finished a craft bag for a friend. I am toying with the idea of a quilt.
