I have to say this is quite a large project for me. I am still working on my Mom's queen sized quilt (Posts: here, here, here, here, and here, as well as another WIP Wednesday). It's starting to give me an enormous sense of accomplishment. As you can see in the first picture below, the quilt top doesn't even fit on my design wall. And imagine, the back will be even larger!
Here is a shot of the border up close. I wanted a print that would compliment the log cabin blocks.
Here I am working on the backing. I back piece, so I used some of the leftover fabrics (and I stashed some). I also used my signature in the horizontal strip (something Wizard of Oz).
Although I do not have a picture of this, the back is finished and I used 55 inches of an old sheet (king sized) that is light blue with a white pin stripe. We never used this sheet anymore because we changed our decor, so I recycled it in the best way I know how, and saved some moolah in the meantime!
I have already started quilting it. I am using an orange thread (Gutermann polyester). I did not have enough, so I took a break from it. Yesterday my supportive husband stopped by Joann's on the way home from work and got me more. Also, I learned something from this experience. Don't lose the labels on the top of the thread. They have a number on them so you can match the color!!! I think he did well on matching it and honestly, if it's not right, no one will probaly even notice :)
I am using a quilting pattern/style/technique that I saw at Oh, Fransson! called Loopy Flowers. It's working well, although my hubby commented that he was not sure he liked it :( I did it slightly different (and I think theirs look better). I am doing one on each log cabin block (and breaking thread between each). That's 42 flowers!!! I've done about 8 flowers so far.
Anyway, I am linking up at Freshly Pieced's Work in Progress Wednesdays. I am sure you will hear more about this quilt soon. I'm off Friday so it's a three day weekend for me and I hope to get it finished (and bound).
Until next time,
Mike.
Many of my followers and quilting friends have told me that I need to change the name of my blog because I am not an amateur, but at heart, I always will be. I call myself an amateur to remind me that every stitch, every fabric shape and every seam is more perfect when it looks like it was made by a human being (especially if it’s me, and I am not perfect). This way I spend more time admiring my finished masterpieces and less time ripping out stitches. This is just a little bit of my journey...

This is just stunning! Love the border fabric you chose.
I'm working on a queen-sized quilt so I can attest to the huge endeavor you are taking on. I'm sure your mom will love it. You'll feel so accomplished when it's done. At least that's what I keep telling myself!
Wow, what a huge project. I'm way too terrified to do anything bigger than baby and lap-sized quilts. Your mum will be so chuffed to get such an extraordinary labour of love.
I love that border! I have a queen quilt that I need to quilt but I am so anxious about doing it on my little machine. Thanks for stopping by my blog and you've got a new follower now too :)
That quilt is a knockout - perfect piecing and great border choice. Happy Easter.
Can't wait to see the loopy flowers and your signature. your Momma is gonna love it!
Thank you! I hope to work more on it tomorrow!
Thank you! Happy Easter to you too!
Thanks for following! Yes, I was surprised how it's size really wasn't much of a hinderance in the small throat space on my machine. Really no more of a struggle than when I do throws or lap quilts. The real challenge is the bulk hanging off the side and back of my sewing table and making it difficult to move while FMQ.
Thank you! (I had to look up chuffed!)
